Snaking A Drain – A Detailed Guide

If you read our posts, then you are at least a bit familiar with snaking drains as we mentioned it in one of our posts. But that was just a post that mentioned some breakdowns and how to address them without any professional help.

This article will be different from the last one. We will talk about the way we use a snake to deal with various issues that appear in different types of drains. Do note that we will talk about the snake and how we use it and we won’t mention other means of addressing those issues.

Here is how we snake drains

Drain-SnakeLet’s start with tubs and all the filth and hair that cause problems. Many try to use plungers to unplug the tub drain and that, in the majority of situations fails to produce positive results. The snake is the tools we use when we have to deal with bathtub drain clogging. The trick to this process is to access the drain through the overflow. We also tend to start with opening the tub stopper and removing all hair and debris from the outset of the drain. We use thin cables for the work because it’s hard to make a thick cable bend enough to produce positive results.

Snaking the shower also requires a thin cable due to the small nature of the shower drain. The pipe is long, and it is located below the shower and thus think cable is necessary as it can bend easily which is required in this case.

The majority of breakdowns that involve clogged toilets don’t need a snake. But some cases aren’t solvable with plungers, and those cases require a professional and a snake. But the toiler drain needs a particular type of snake which is known as toilet auger. It’s not safe to use other types of the snake for unclogging toilets as they can’t go through the toilet entry and penetrate the toilet trap without scraping the inside of the toilet. You shouldn’t try to unplug a toilet if you don’t know how to do it reliably and if you don’t have the toiler auger then don’t even try to do it.

Snaking the main line drain

Sneaking-DrainThe main line pipe isn’t even similar to other types of drains, and thus the unplugging approach is different. First of all, it requires an extra thick and long cable to remove the stoppage. Smaller cables will knot up and double back due to extra space in the drain. Giant snakes are rigid and hard to bend which is necessary to clear the stoppage in the main line drains.

This unplugging is best left to professionals. You can hurt yourself or cause extensive damage if you try to do this, and thus we recommend against trying it.

Tips On Cleaning Drains And Garbage Disposals

Advising on how to resolve simple plumbing issues is something we are willing to do even it costs us a bit of money. Those issues can be solved by anyone that owns some basic tools like pliers and nose pliers. They are quite simple, and it would be a waste of time for us to send someone. So, if there is a chance that you can fix it alone, then you will find how to do it in this or another similar article on our page.

This post will address plumbing issues that concern the garbage disposal and drains. This isn’t a detailed guide on how to address issues that plague them, but a summary of what you should do in a case a breakdown happens, and it corresponds to one of our short guide posts.

Utilize common ingredients to clean a garbage disposal

Garbage disposals are susceptible to failures if you have a lot of garbage that goes through them. Professionals use unfamiliar products to deal with this, and those products are very efficient at cleaning garbage disposals. But you don’t have to waste money on those things as some common ingredients can work as well.

The largest problem with the disposal area is the clogging that can happen due to garbage sticking to the surface. The cheapest way to solve this issue is to use ice with either vinegar or rock salt. This combination will allow the ice to stay stable for a longer time and that hardened ice will scrape everything from the surface of the garbage disposal. Don’t overdo this as ice could damage some essential parts of the disposal system.

You can also cut peels of a citrus fruit and pour them into the garbage disposal with cold water. This will block the bad smell that comes from it.

The easy way to snake a drain

Drain-CleaningSnaking a drain should be done only if you have the necessary equipment whose size matches the pipe. Using an oversized snake might scrape insides of the pipe, and that makes it susceptible to clogging even more than before.

You shouldn’t jump to a snake right away as plunger can solve many instances of clogged drains. Try the plunger first and check the results. If this isn’t successful, then try it once again. You should use the snake only when you conclude that plunger won’t do any good.

DIY – Simple Plumbing Problems And How To Tackle Them

Every plumbing problem can be simple or complex. If it is a complex issue, then you can’t do anything but call a plumber. Simple plumbing problems are easy to fix, and you don’t have to hire a professional to do that. But, if there is a persistent problem then some professional help is necessary to prevent long-term issues.

We won’t discuss complicated plumbing issues as they are best left to those that can tackle them. If you encounter one, then call someone who knows how to deal with it. In place of those, we will talk about some simple problems that anyone can take on. Those will be plumbing issues that are easy to fix and that don’t require any specialized equipment.

How to deal with low water pressure and slow draining sink

Low-Water-PressureFirst, let’s talk about sinks, what happens to them and how to fix that. Slow draining sinks are one of the most common plumbing issues. The most common cause for this matter is the collection of the debris and hair at the pop-up over the sink. This can be “repaired” in several minutes if you have a zip-it tool or some nose pliers. If you don’t have a Zip-it tool, then you can use regular nose pliers to remove the nut that holds the pop up section. This will give you access to the area where hair and other debris is. Clean it and return the pop-up. If this doesn’t fix the problem, then call a professional.

Low water pressure is a plumbing issue that tends to appear a year or two after you install the faucet. And that faucet is usually the problem. Well, the real problem is calcium that deposits in the aerator. Do note that this issue is connected to the calcium in aerator only if the low pressure affects both hot and cold water. If that is the case, then just remove the aerator, scrape off the calcium deposit and you are set. If that isn’t the case, then call a professional because they have all the tools with which they can check the pipes and other elements of the system. If you try to tinker without proper tools, you just might do more damage than good.

The safest decision is to call professional help

Plumbing-ServiceYou should remember that various elements of the plumbing system can cause the same breakdown. If you try to fix something and realize that the cause isn’t what you expected, then you should call professionals. Meddling with complex issues is one way to learn, but you shouldn’t risk it with plumbing systems as that may lead to unexpected problems and those can cost a lot.
